On May 7th, 2022 Sapphic JA launched their very first event. The advertisements for this event started back in April and many queer influencers were publically endorsing this event as yet another queer event to be present. I ensured that I reached early in order to make it easier for me to adjust to the environment and really see what the event had to offer. So, only a few minutes shy of 7:00 pm, I was at the gates of the event. The gates were a little distance from the party itself, however, this space facilitated an area for cars to park during the event. Once, you arrived you would be greeted by the front desk attendants. These individuals, in my opinion, worked well as a team and they were so lovely to talk to, as a result, they added to the event’s aura that was so far looking great. They checked my RSVP (given you had to have RSVPed to attend) and handed me an armband. These armbands could range from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘DTF’, each colour I very much paid keen attention to throughout the party. In Jamaican fashion, the event did not kick off at 7:00 pm. However, the music was playing, seats and tables were available and the bar was open and ready. Around 9:00 pm, is when more individuals started to trickle in and by 10:00 pm it started to really resemble more of a party. The music at the event was curated by three DJs namely: DJ Arlene Flavour, DJ Anash and DJ Ear Audigy. In the earliest times of the party, we had 90s R&B playing to give you something to rock to and then around 11 pm you had some reggae, afrobeat and dancehall and by 12 am - 2 am you had a mix of more famous music in reggae, afrobeat and dancehall some TikTok famous songs even played and electronic music. Some genres didn’t sit well with the crowd, the more up to date music got people behaving disrespectfully (AS THEY SHOULD). For crowd engagement, prizes were given away either for dance-offs or just answering basic trivia about sponsors mentioned prior; other things like rolls and free shots were available. Additionally, food was available in the parking lot if needed.

The club is bumping, the ladies look good, and the alcohol is flowing. There is much pain in this world but not in this room.”- That one meme.

The event from where I stand was a good one. I enjoyed myself and everyone was very nice and inclusive the whole time. Everyone seemed to be having some kind of fun. A downside would have been when the light seemed to have gone but I believe that outside of the event planner’s power, maybe next time there will be a standby generator just in case. If you are an AFAB individual, sapphic or even trans woman needing a space to just party and have fun with such people then maybe another Sapphic JA event is in your future.

Did you attend the sapphic JA launch party or wanted to? What are your thoughts on the event or the fact that Jamaican individuals are finally creating the space for like-minded queer individuals? Will you be in attendance at the next event?
